KAYAK LEVEL l - RIVER COURSE
OUTLINE
May 31 - June 1, 2008
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Satisfactorily completed Basic
Kayaking Course or equivalent paddling experience.
ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE ASKED TO
HAVE ARRANGED FOR THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT TO SAFELY AND COMFORTABLY COMPLETE
THE COURSE:

Paddling dress - wet suit
or dry suit is essential. YOU GET WET!! and the water is usually cold!
(rental available at local dive shops).

Kayak, paddle, spray skirt
& floatation will be supplied by E.E.O.

Helmet (hockey helmet is
acceptable).

Personal Floatation Device
(PFD).
-
Tent, cookware, food etc.
Students are responsible for all their own personal camping supplies.
However, lunches for Saturday and Sunday will be provided.

House keeping units are
also available in the area or you can camp near the "Ruins" on the river
near the course location.
SCHEDULE
Wednesday May 28, 2008
LOCATION TO BE ANNOUNCED.
7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Introduce Instructors, outline course activities and
brief students on the location of course (river). Arrange meeting times at
the river, plus final arrangements on transportation.
Saturday May 31, 2008 NOTE:
Be ready to paddle at 9:00 a.m. If
course is held at Terra Nova River, most students travel to the river on
Friday evening and camp overnight.
9:00 a.m. - 12 Noon:
FLATWATER SESSION
Review of strokes (forward stroke, forward and reverse sweep, stop, low
brace, high brace, draw, roll or wet exits).
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.:
Lunch (supplied)
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.: Use
and deployment of throw ropes and accompanying safety procedures.
2:00 - 5:00 p.m.: RIVER
SESSION (Class I rapids)
Practice ferries, back ferries, eddy turns, S-turns, reading white water,
capsizes and rescues.
5:00 - 7:00 p.m.:
Supper.
7:00 - 10:00 p.m.:
LECTURE: Video critique of each paddler.
NOTE: Video will be shown at a cabin near course location. Exact locations
will be announced at the beginning of the course.
Sunday June 1, 2008
7:30 a.m.: Rise for
breakfast.
9:00 - 12:00 Noon:
RIVER SESSION (Class II rapids)
Practice ferries, back ferries, eddy turns reading white water (waves,
holes, hydraulics) S-turns, riding small holes and rescues.
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.:
Lunch (supplied).
1:00 - 2:00 p.m.:
Running small ledges and shutes, surfing waves and playing in larger holes
(participation optional).
2:00 - 3:00 p.m.:
Individual evaluation of each student by instructor.
3:00 p.m.: Break camp
and return home.
