CRCA LEVEL II - RIVER KAYAKING COURSE OUTLINE
June 28 - 29, 2008


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Satisfactorily completed Paddle Canada River Kayaking LEVEL I or equivalent. Paddling experience.

COST: $250.00 (HST included) - This includes instruction and camping gear while on the river.

ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE ASKED TO HAVE ARRANGED FOR THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT TO SAFELY AND COMFORTABLY COMPLETE THE COURSE.

  • Paddling dress - wet suit or dry suit is essential. YOU GET WET!! and the water is usually cold! (rental available at local dive shops).
     

  • Kayak, paddle, spray skirt & floatation and throw bags.
     

  • Helmet.
     

  • Personal Floatation Device (PFD).

Supplied Equipment
Tent, sleeping mats, cookware, and dishes will be supplied by E.E.O. at the campsite on the river. Students are responsible for food and all other personal camping supplies including sleeping bags. Food can be carried in the boats along with a change of dry clothes. Arrangements have been made to have the camping gear transported to the campsite several days before the course. If students want their sleeping bags brought in with the other camping gear, they must drop it off to Jim Price no later than June 16.

 

SCHEDULE

JUNE 28, 2008 NOTE:
Be ready to paddle at 9:00 a.m. The course is being held at Terra Nova River, most students travel to the river on Friday evening and camp overnight.

9:00 - 12:00 a.m.: RIVER SESSION (Class I - II rapids)
Scouting and reading white water. Use and deployment of throw ropes and accompanying safety procedures. Practice ferries, back ferries, eddy turns, S-turns. capsizes, rescues and being rescued. Proper technique for running waterfalls

12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m.: Lunch.

1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.: RIVER SESSION (Class II - III rapids)
Practice ferries, jet ferries, eddy turns reading white water (waves, holes, hydraulics) S-turns, riding small holes and rescues.

5:00 p.m.:  Set up camp.
 

JUNE 29, 2008

9:00 A.M. - 12:00 p.m.: RIVER SESSION
Running small ledges and chutes, surfing waves and playing in larger holes and doing enders.

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.: Lunch.

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.: TESTING: RIVER RUNNING
All students will be required to run a predetermined course which will be set up with markers. Students must negotiate each eddy alternating left and right demonstrating the proper strokes skillfully.

3:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M.: Paddle to Spencer's Bridge, student assessment and return home.
